Merkwater Casting Handlines These are a limited run of hand finished wooden handlines. They are made from top grade baltic birch plywood. While I have a bunch done ready to ship immediately, for those who order a little later it may take a week or two to hit the mail.
(Each handline comes with about 50 yards of 10lb line and a wooden ball to practice casting)Fishing with handlines is a wonderful, and for many, nostalgic experience. Without the buffer of rod and reel it comes down to just you and the fish. Every twitch, every strike, is communicated directly to your hands. There is no mechanical drag between you and the fight. This is a simple and visceral form of fishing.Like many anglers as a child I started fishing with a hook, sinker, and line wrapped around a soda can. Through the years I have had several nice rod and reel setups but a handline of one sort or another has always been in my tackle bag. The largest fish I have ever caught have been on handlines. The most fish I have ever caught have been on handlines. It is almost a game now to out-fish my friends using just my handlines. The secret to fishing is not fancy gear, it is knowing the fish. If you understand the fish then it really does not matter what gear you have, only what you have at the end of your line under water. A wise old friend once told me that most fishing gear is designed to catch fisherman. The simplicity of handlines makes them great for young kids; every fish feels like a monster and there is no time wasted trying to untangle those junk reels the usually come with so called "kids" fishing poles. They will hold up to 150 yards of 20lb monofilament line and can be easily cast distances comparable to a rod and reel. Our handlines have 10 inches of wind which allows you to retrieve fast enough to keep even lightweight lures in play. They are compact and lightweight, easily fitting into a pocket or pack. They are great for kayak or canoe fishing. They are inexpensive and durable. You can have several handlines pre-rigged with different tackle setups saving time on the water. Our handlines excel as a survival fishing option for all the reasons already mentioned. They keep your line and tackle neatly organized and ready to go and will work perfectly on just about any fish you have the skill to hook.FAQ:Q. What are they made of?A. They are made from Baltic Birch Plywood. This is a high grade plywood that is often used to make things like skateboards. Each handline has been sanded, stained, sealed, and hand wrapped by me or my wife.Q. Will they be made from solid wood?A. Possibly. If you really really want one from solid wood, email me and Ill see what I can do.Q. What do the handlines come with?A. Each casting handline comes with about 40 yards of 10lb line and a wooden ball to practice casting.Q. Why do they not come with tackle?A. Two reasons... One is that I just don't have the time to tie up rigs for each handline, and the proper rig depends greatly on what type of water you are fishing and what fish you are after. I will be making videos on my favorite tackle setups very soon. Q. Is there a risk of the line cutting your fingers with a big fish?A. Not really. The only time I got a small cut from the line was after many hours of fishing while swimming in the ocean. The water had made my skin prune up and soften letting the line give me a small cut from just reeling it in. The reel is what the fish fight, you only handle the line to guide it while winding the reel.Q. Are these strong enough for big fish?A. Absolutely. I've pulled in many fish over 30 inches in length. In fact, that is one reason they are so fun. With no mechanical drag you really have to pay close attention to your fish, giving it line when it runs and pulling it in when it tires. This truly is playing the fish.Q. Whats wrong with a rod and reel?A. I love my fishing pole, especially when I'm actively fishing with lures. Handlines are just another fun option. I carry my handline in my day pack because I never know when I might have a chance to fish.
