Ferrocerium (fer-oh-seer-ee-uh m) is a man-made metallic material that produces exceptionally hot sparks when scraped with a rough surface or a sharp edge. The shavings burn at an astounding 5000F.
A hard and sharp scraper is essential when using a ferrocerium rod. It could be a sharp piece of metal, glass, stone, even a sea shell might work. The sharper and harder the scraper the easier it will be to produce an abundant shower of hot sparks from your ferrocerium rod. Fortunately we include an excellent scraper with each ferro rod.

Remember this is spark based fire-lighting, not flame based like a match or lighter. Tinder preparation is critical. Tinder should be dry and very fine. Grass, bark, wood shavings, and other plant fibers are excellent sources of tinder, provided they've been processed correctly.
